Suicide Prevention: What You Need to Know & How You Can Help

July 08, 20253 min read

Suicide is one of the leading causes of death in the United States—and its impact is devastating. In 2022, more than 49,000 people lost their lives to suicide, and an estimated 1.7 million attempted suicide in 2021, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). That’s one death every 11 minutes.

At Pathstones Counseling Center, we are deeply committed to helping individuals and families find hope and healing, especially in times of crisis. Suicide is a serious public health issue, but the good news is—it’s preventable.

The Reality of Suicide in the U.S.

· Second leading cause of death for individuals aged 10–34

· Highest suicide rate among those 75 and older

· Men are over three times more likely to die by suicide than women

· Firearms are the most common method, involved in about half of all suicides

Yet behind every statistic is a person—a life that matters deeply. And for every life lost, countless others are left grieving and asking, “What could I have done?”

Risk Factors, Warning Signs & Protective Factors

Understanding the risk factors and warning signs of suicide can help us recognize when someone is struggling—and possibly save a life.

Risk Factors

These are characteristics that may increase the likelihood of suicidal thoughts or behaviors:

· Previous suicide attempts

· Family history of suicide

· Depression, bipolar disorder, or substance abuse

· Access to firearms or lethal means

· Trauma, abuse, or chronic illness

· Major life stressors (loss, legal or financial difficulties)

· Social isolation or bullying

· Stigma around seeking help

· Historical or generational trauma

It’s important to know that not everyone who experiences these factors will attempt suicide, but they do increase vulnerability—especially if left unaddressed.

Warning Signs

Some signs may indicate that someone is in immediate danger:

· Talking or writing about death or suicide

· Expressing hopelessness or worthlessness

· Saying things like “I want out” or “Life isn’t worth living”

· Withdrawing from loved ones or isolating

· Increased use of alcohol or drugs

· Reckless behavior or sudden mood changes

· Talking about being a burden or feeling trapped

If you notice these signs, don’t wait—reach out.

Protective Factors

There are also characteristics and supports that reduce suicide risk:

· Access to quality mental health care

· Strong personal connections—family, friends, church, or community

· Cultural identity and spiritual beliefs

· Good coping, communication, and problem-solving skills

· Support from health professionals, including follow-up care

Building a network of support and ensuring access to professional help are vital steps in prevention.

What You Can Do: 5 Steps to Save a Life

The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline recommends five simple but powerful steps to help someone in crisis:

1. Ask – Don’t be afraid to ask, “Are you thinking about suicide?” Research shows that asking does not increase the risk—it shows you care.

2. Be There – Whether in person or by phone, your presence matters. Listen without judgment.

3. Keep Them Safe – Remove access to firearms, medications, or other lethal means.

4. Help Them Connect – Guide them to resources like a counselor, pastor, doctor, or the 988 Lifeline.

5. Follow Up – A text, call, or visit can make a huge difference and remind them they’re not alone. Learn more at www.BeThe1To.com and be the one to help prevent suicide.
